There are multiple types of seizures, Idiopathic Generalized, Idiopathic Partial, Symptomatic Generalized, and Symptomatic Partial Epilepsy each with their own specific causes, symptoms and treatments
Fig. 2-1 Chart of types of Epilepsy's
Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy
Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy is commonly developed and found in younger but some cases, may only be diagnosed when the patient is older. This type of the disorder can usually only recognized from the physical seizures as no nervous system abnormalities can be identified through imaging studies. People diagnosed with I.D.E. may have multiple areas of the brain affected by epileptic charges, but usually have normal intelligence. This type of epilepsy is usually treated with medication. Seizures that affect I.G.E. Patients:
Myoclonic seizures which are sudden and have a short amount of jerking
Absence seizures
Generalized Tonic-Clonic seizures
Idiopathic Partial epilepsy
Idiopathic Partial Epilepsy is only found in children and is considered one of the mildest types of epilepsy. Develops in children between the ages 5 and 8 and is mainly outgrown by puberty. These seizures tend to happen when the child is sleeping and involve the face and the secondarily generalized seizures. Seizures that affect I.P.E. Patients:
Myoclonic seizures which are sudden and have a short amount of jerking
Absence seizures
Generalized Tonic-Clonic seizures
symptomatic Generalized Epilepsy
This Epilepsy is caused by widespread brain damage, and patients with S.P.E. often have other neurological disorders such as mental retardation or cerebral palsy. Inherited brain diseases such as adrenoleukodystrophy (ADL) and can commonly be caused by injury during birth. Multiple types of seizures are common with people diagnosed with Symptomatic Generalized Epilepsy and can be difficult to control. Seizures that affect S.G.E. Patients:
Temporal lobe
Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Occipital lobe
Symptomatic Partial Epilepsy
Most common type of epilepsy within adults but can also occur with children. This type of epilepsy can be caused by strokes, trauma, tumors, brain abnormalities, and more which are localized abnormality of the brain. S.P.E can be treated by surgery to remove the abnormal brain and has a high rate of being very successful. Seizures that affect S.P.E. Patients:
